Second Place, United Press International Book Award, column writing, 1964-1965: James (Jim) Miller for his review column “In One Ear”
Best Editorial in a high school newspaper, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, 1968. Delia Pitts: Ms. Pitts’ award made the Midway the first paper to win, in one year, an award in both the American Newspaper Publishers Association contest and the Columbia Scholastic Press association contest.
ANPA and Quill & Scroll journalism honor society, Best advertisement, 1969-1970: Maria Rosner. Ms. Rosner’s entry, a double-page Harper Court ad, won over 211 other student-prepared ads from across the nation.
American Newspaper Publishers Association, Best Feature, 1969 and 1970: Mark Patinkin for his story about a drama rehearsal.
Award of Excellence and Certificate of Merit, Midwest Award, Best News Writing, 1976. Mark Seidenberg won the top honor for “two stories on the school’s budget problems earlier [in the] year.” The awards announcement did not specify which story won which award.
First Place, National Scholastic Press Association Story of the Year, 2018: Natalie Glick. “Conservative students entitled to safe space, too”
First Place, National Scholastic Press Association COVID-19 Coverage, 2021. Ella Beiser: “Hit Hard: Chicago Latinx communities face challenges combatting pandemic”
First Place, National Scholastic Press Association Photo of the Year, 2021: Elliott Taylor. Mr. Taylor captured students and parents protesting Lab’s conservative return-to-school approach after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Honorable Mention, National Scholastic Press Association Digital Story of the Year, 2019. Emma Trone and Jacob Posner: “The Bubble,” a two-episode series exploring the nuances of the U-High community, is the Midway’s first audio journalism to receive national recognition.
