For the first time in recent memory, a schoolwide career-related assembly will be held during Lab C on Oct. 22. It is organized by the learning and counseling department as well as the alumni relations and development department.
More than 30 alumni will lead workshops on a variety of career experiences, from health care to art. Each is expected to have a five-minute presentation followed by 20 minutes for questions.
Camille Baughn-Cunningham, a counselor, said that the department supports the idea of finding more ways for students to look at different careers. She hopes that this assembly will allow students to explore careers that they may not have been exposed to before.
“There are so many options out there for them, and this is just one way we could allow them to see some of that,” she said.
Dr. Baughn-Cunningham, a U-High graduate, said alumni want to give back to their school.
“This was a home to me,” she said, “and this had been a place that had really fostered my dreams and my goals.”
Daniel Chang, co-president of the Maroon Key Society, has helped plan this event because he wanted alumni to get more involved with the school.
Students ranked these workshops in Advisory on Oct. 7 based on their interests or what they want to learn more about, but not everyone will get their top choices.
Daniel said that even if a student is randomly assigned to a workshop, they may enjoy something they previously didn’t think they would.
He said, “It maybe is not something that they’re really interested in, but just learning about the profession you could really get anything out of any session.”
