On Oct. 21, FemSTEM hosted its first-ever club orientation at Ray Elementary School to encourage U-High students to promote STEM subjects among elementary school girls.

Unlike existing clubs around STEM topics, the new club targets girls in grades K-8 at Ray Elementary School and encourages them to pursue their interest in STEM fields.

“Girls are very interested in STEM at a young age, but as they get older that interest dissolves because of society and stereotypes and lack of opportunities and encouragement,” co-founder Susan Huang said. “So we thought that if we tackle the problem by targeting younger girls and keeping the interest going, it might be a little more difficult for that interest to dissolve

The club operates as a service site, so sophomores interested in earning service hours can apply to do community service there.

The club does not host lunchtime meetings like most clubs, but you can contact either Susan Huang or Bethany Stevens if you’re interested in joining.
