Through practicing problems and meeting virtually, Math Team members earn high scores at contests such as the Illinois Mathematics League.

The Math Team placed first and third in its first two competitions of the year, and the team has added practice times for a national test.

The team placed first in state in the Illinois Math League Oct. 13. Co-captain Freddie Tang noted that their performance at the IML was also much better than last year.

“Especially the seniors, myself included, we didn’t perform as well as we wanted to. We should have had more practice,” Freddie said.

At the North Suburban Math League Sept. 30, the team finished third in the state, the best result the team has achieved at NSML in the past 12 years, according to Freddie.

Sophomore Jeffrey Chen started an after-school program. The 45-minute weekly lecture prepares math team members for the American Mathematics Competition 12, while shoring up their existing knowledge of proofs and theorems.

According to Freddie, the team is having no trouble accommodating for remote learning in practice as the practice time has not diminished due to virtual learning.
