City Bulletin: NASCAR events to cause some area closings
The July NASCAR race will affect Chicagoans with street closures and other canceled events.
- Installation of barriers will start on June 15.
- Partial closure of main arterials surrounding Grant Park will begin on June 25: Columbus Drive, June 25; DuSable Lake Shore Drive (Randolph Street to McFetridge Drive), June 28; Roosevelt Road and northbound Michigan Avenue, June 29; and southbound Michigan Avenue, June 30.
- Streets will begin to reopen as early as July 3 with all areas reopened by July 15.
- The closures will occur for sidewalks and streets near the event, but parks — Grant, Maggie Daley and Millennium — will still stay open.
- Access to Museum Campus will remain open. Adler Planetarium will operate normal hours, the FIeld Museum will reduce hours on race weekend, and Shedd Aquarium will have reduced hours on the days before and after race weekend and close on the weekend.
- Taste of Chicago will be pushed back to September instead of taking place in July as it has in previous years.
- Cleanup will ensue for four to five days after the race and events end depending on the scale of the races.
- The Fourth of July celebration fireworks at Navy Pier will take place as every year.
