The Literary Translation club is hosting poet and Rhino Magazine editor, Naoko Fujimoto, on Feb. 3 from 3:45-4:45 p.m.

Participants will learn how to write poems in the traditional Japanese “waka” or “tanka” style, which will possibly be published in Volume 3 of the Ouroboros Literary Translation Journal.

Currently, Ms. Fujimoto translates traditional Japanese poetry to modern English. Some of her work can be found in the Columbia University’s School of Art’s literary magazine, the Columbia Journal.

Ms. Fujimoto also creates graphic poetry and hopes to include an exercise that introduces visual elements.

“There is power in graphics because they do not require one to understand a certain language, ” she said in an interview with the Midway. “Anyone can communicate and most likely understand a piece that consists of visual elements.”

Students can RSVP to the workshop by emailing Literary Translation president Penelope Huang or club adviser Maja Teref.

“I encourage any students who enjoy or are even interested in poetry to think about attending the workshop,” Ms. Fujimoto said. “Bottom line, my goal is to depict what my job is like as a poet who translates.”
