The Robotics Team competed in the Greater Pittsburgh Regional from March 1-3, and received the Gracious Professionalism Award for their conduct, but did not qualify for playoffs.
Darren Fuller, eighth grade science teacher and Robotics Team coach, is still proud of how the team members handled themselves, despite some technical issues with the robot.
“The team did great, our robot not so much,” Mr. Fuller said. “This was our first competition of the season. We had a lot of electrical problems with the robot that just kind of limited our performance.”
With only seven weeks to design, build, test and prototype a fully completed robot, some issues at the first tournament were to be expected.
“You kind of expect that there’s gonna be unforeseen problems and things you don’t expect to happen,” Mr. Fuller said.
The team still pulled through and won the Gracious Professionalism Award, awarded to the team which goes the most out of their way to help other people at the tournament.
“I think that’s kind of the Lab way in a lot of ways: that we go out of our way to help others, and that’s what this award really reflects,” Mr. Fuller said.
The team has a tournament in Milwaukee March 15-17, the last weekend of spring break.
Mr. Fuller says the U-High Robotics Team has a simple goal for this tournament: “We hope to win, that’s our goal.”
