What sort of ideas, projects or initiatives do you have for next year? What is your main goal?
“I want to effectively communicate what the entire student body feels without bias and without just looking at my grade or my friends but rather looking at everyone in the school and what they want and what they need. A big part of that to me as a member of multiple affinity groups, and as a person of color, is to collaborate with the leaders of affinity groups to see what they’re looking at from these different perspectives that we have, which might not be able to be considered with the Student Council that we have. A lot of the issues that I see discussed in these affinity groups are often really not addressed by administration or by Student Council or by anybody, and I don’t really see bills being passed and things like that or steps being made a lot of the time.”
What experiences and skills make you qualified for this position?
“I’m in a couple of clubs that I think make me qualified for this position. I’m in multiple affinity clubs, and so I understand how each student’s individual identity is important to who they are and what ideas they have. I’m a part of BRAVE, which caters to the student body and what they want, and it is a fun opportunity that is individualized, so I’m able to holistically look at what a student needs and provide that for them and be entertaining and interactive with the entire student body. And I’m also a multi-sport athlete, and all those things kind of show that I’m dedicated. I can allot my time to things differently. I also was at the top of my class at the National Youth Leadership Forum.”
How do you kind of plan on being the middleman at the intersection of students, but then also faculty and admin, you’re going to work with a lot of different people. How are you going to be that middleman?
“I think it’s really important for Student Council to collaborate with the adults in terms of what the student body needs, rather than what individuals personally want. I think that an ideal Student Council is one that can effectively communicate to the faculty and the upper management of the school what they’re looking for and what they want. It’s about fostering relationships with the dean of students and the high school principal, and making sure that they’re aware of everything that we’re doing, and inviting them to the meetings, and keeping them updated with everything that’s going on.”
