What sort of ideas, projects or initiatives do you have for next year? What is your main goal?
“A lot of initiatives that I plan to implement next year come from initiatives that have I proposed this year on Student Council. That includes working alongside the Lab Steering Committee, which makes administrative decisions in the school. Right now, we have a system where we can check in periodically with the chair, but next year I plan to see if student attendance at Steering Committee meetings is possible. I also have several ideas that have to do with physical facilities in the school like this year. The most meaningful of my three initiatives that I’m looking forward to next year is the SOARS Initiative, which is kind of on the heels of Dr. Hund’s concern for DEI initiatives in the science department. We’re going to have mentors who are in upper level sciences who have shadows who can come in and learn and really it’s just to encourage underrepresented students to engage in this type of work.”
What experiences and skills make you qualified for this position?
“I have a year of Student Council, so I know a lot of the ins and outs of the bill process. I also know what it’s like to communicate with teachers and administration to push for the initiatives that students want or are concerned about, and I know how to voice student concern. I’m comfortable approaching any type of student across the school, and I think that’s kind of what you need, if you are in this position, because, you know, first and foremost, you’re supposed to serve the students and you’re supposed to be there for the students. And to do that you kind of have to know how to interact with them and how to learn their concerns about the school, and I feel like I can do that.”
How do you plan on being the middleman at the intersection of high school students, faculty and administration?
“I think the most important component is being able to reach out to students across the school and effectively communicate what they say to the rest of Student Council, and being confident when I’m proposing initiatives to Ms. Campos because she’s really at the heart of this school. And just being relentless in my pursuit to communicate with administration and voice people’s concerns.”
