At the end of a historic season, the girls soccer team finished fourth in the IHSA 1A State Finals elimination game at North Central College in Naperville on May 31.
For the first time in five years, the team has advanced to the state finals. The team advanced to state after winning the IHSA Super-Sectional Championship in penalty kick offs on May 25. They finished first in their conference and ended the season with a record of 13-4-1.
Junior Lucy Aronsohn enjoyed her experience at state, even though the results were not what the team was hoping for.
“I still thought it was super fun to stay in a hotel with the team. It made this typically stressful last weekend of school a lot more fun,” Lucy said. “Going to state is always the biggest goal, and so it was awesome that we made it happen through perseverance and hard work.”
Senior Norie Kaufman-Sites, one of the team captains, believes the team’s work ethic was what made them so successful this year. Throughout the season, she saw each player work hard for each other. Through bonding activities like team dinners and the Michigan trip over spring break, the team members grew closer and more motivated.
“Overall, beyond the individual talent on the team, of which there was a lot, I can say that I have never played on a team that worked as hard as this one,” Norie said. “It was such a special experience to be a part of such an incredible team and truly a privilege to captain it with some of my best friends.”
