Juliana Zavala will step into her new role as athletics director on April 7, bringing more than 12 years of experience leading athletics programs across Chicago. Ms. Zavala most recently served as the director of sports administration for Chicago Public Schools, overseeing athletics programming at over 600 schools.
Ms. Zavala will be taking over for David Ribbens, who has been serving as interim athletics director since previous athletics director Matt Manley left Lab in June 2024.
During her time with CPS, Ms. Zavala launched student engagement initiatives, built partnerships with local businesses and created opportunities for student-athletes aspiring to play at the collegiate level. Additionally, Ms. Zavala played a central role in making girls flag football a sanctioned sport in Illinois in 2023. As the athletics director at U-High, Ms. Zavala hopes to ensure that programs reflect student interests.
“I would love to survey students. I want to know what sports they want to see at their school and how I can support them,” Ms. Zavala said.
Ms. Zavala strongly believes athletics should enhance academics, emphasizing student development in sports and the classroom.
“It’s student first, athlete second,” Ms. Zavala said. “I always say, it’s not about winning and losing; it’s about winning and learning.”
Looking forward, Ms. Zavala plans to form leadership councils that include all student-athletes, ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping the U-High athletics program.
“Anyone who wants to join can contribute ideas. It’s important that students help shape their own athletic experiences,” Ms. Zavala said.
Additionally, Ms. Zavla hopes to strengthen relationships between coaches, alumni and athletes through collaborative events and mentorship opportunities.
“Collaborating outside school and connection with alumni can really help build a community. That’s something I’m excited to do here,” Ms. Zavla said.
Above all, Ms. Zavala looks forward to joining U-High’s close-knit community, inspired by the warmth and collaboration she has experienced so far.
“Everyone has made me feel at home,” Ms. Zavala said. “I’m excited to join this family and continue the beautiful tradition and history.”
