The varsity boys basketball team ended its season on Feb. 26 with a 57-41 regional semifinal loss to top-seeded Leo High School at Harlan Community Academy.
Despite the loss, the team put up a strong fight, keeping the game competitive.
Senior Anik Shetty, one of the team’s captains, was proud of the team’s performance.
“We fought hard against Leo, the top seed in our sectional, and stayed close until the end, but they pulled away,” he said.
Throughout the season, the team faced strong competition like the early matchup against tough opponents like Gary Comer College Prep. As the season progressed, they secured victories against conference rivals like Latin School of Chicago and F.W. Parker School at home.
Anik said he appreciates the team’s effort throughout the season, especially at the team’s last home game against Hansberry College Prep.
“We grew a lot from the start of the season,” he said. “Beating Hansberry at home was an awesome way to finish out our senior year on our court.”
Several players earned individual recognition for their performance this season. Senior Noah Hoereth was named first-team all-conference, while seniors Arhan Ganapathi and Noah Runesha received honorable mentions.
For the four senior captains — Anik, Noah Hoereth, Arhan, and Noah Runesha — the final game was the end of years of playing together.
“It wasn’t like everyone was crying, but it was emotional,” Anik said. “Both Noahs and I have been playing together since sixth grade, so knowing it was our last game together was tough.”
