The Midway is featuring athletes, selected at random, from school teams for informal interviews about their sports. Alex Giles is a senior on the girls basketball and soccer team. Alex’s responses have been lightly edited for clarity, style and length.
How did you get into soccer?
“I started soccer when I was really young. My parents put me in it, and then I started doing travel soccer as well.”
What about soccer do you enjoy the most?
“I would say I enjoy the competitive spirit with soccer and the connection with teammates.”
What’s one thing in your gear bag you can’t live without and why?
“I would say my cleats, because I can’t play without them.”
Who is the one artist you have to listen to as you get ready for a game, and why?
“A lot of Rihanna and Drake.”
If you could design your own jersey, what would it look like?
“I would have my own number, 13, and my last name with the UChicago logo on it.”
What’s your favorite pregame snack?
“Chips and Coke definitely.”
What are your pregame rituals or superstitions?
“Before games I’ll go out with friends and we’ll get food, then go get taped and warmed up.”
If you could meet one professional athlete, who would it be and why?
“Stephen Curry, because growing up he was my idol, and I also really love to play basketball.”
What is your favorite Gatorade flavor?
“The blue one, glacier freeze, is the best.”
