The boys swimming and diving season ended Feb. 28 with U-High’s only state swimmer, senior Sebastian Gans, competing in two events at the IHSA State Swimming and Diving Championship meet at the FCM Aquatics Center in Westmont.
Sebastian, a team captain, placed 40th in the 100-yard backstroke and 45th in the 50-yard freestyle, which he qualified for at sectionals a week earlier.
At state, 323 teams compete in one class.
Prior to competing at state, Sebastian was very happy to celebrate the moment with his team, emphasizing the support of his teammates and the years of effort leading up to his qualification.
“When I touched the wall after my 50-free, I got to see everyone around me cheer for me and be really proud of me, and I was also very proud of myself,” Sebastian said. “That whole experience was very validating of the work I put in.”
Sebastian also set two school records, breaking the 50-freestyle at a time of 21.64. Additionally, Sebastian, alongside Sam Oyler, Simon Gans and Jeffrey Wang, broke the school record for the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.01. At sectionals, the team placed second overall and won medals in 10 of the 11 events.
Beyond competition, the team was also able to get closer and bond during moments outside of the pool.
Sebastian said, “During practice, it’s kind of hard to talk because we’re in the water, so I feel like moments at the pasta parties and in the locker rooms have really brought the team together this year.”
