About Us

The U-High Midway is the newspaper at University High School, published since 1923 at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. The website launched May 1, 2018. Typically, 10 issues are printed each school year. PDFs of past issues are available at the school’s website.

Mission: In a time when the press is criticized, the U-High Midway seeks to inform, educate and serve the community of University High School. The Midway is developed and managed by students, for students. In every story we write, the Midway should give a voice to the experiences of people at U-High. We will report on the people, activities and thoughts that make our school unique, striving to include the voices we haven’t heard yet.

In 2024, the Midway celebrated its 100th year of publication. Since its founding, the Midway has overcome obstacles, documented U-High history and become one of the most recognized high school newspapers in the nation. In the journalism storage room, a team of Midway staff looked through Midway archives dating back to 1924, finding powerful stories, alumni and images to showcase the diverse coverage of U-High history in 100 items — 10 lists of 10. While the archives have a few gaps, the information presented still captures the Midway’s legacy at U-High. Read the Midway 100.
