Over 13 years after Barack Obama took office, the construction of the Obama Presidential Center in Woodlawn promotes civic engagement and gives new hope to Chicago’s South Side.

In 2008, Barack Obama won a historic election, making him the first African American President of the United States. His campaign, running on a central idea of “hope” empowered voters across the nation. Now, 13 years after he initially took office in 2009, his foundation continues the ideals of his presidency in the building of the Obama Presidential Center. Could this be a new hope for Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods?
