To welcome some of the 1,600 Venezulean asylum-seeking migrants who have arrived in Chicago since Aug. 31, students in the Political Discourse Club and Junior State of America are running a hygiene product supply drive. The drive will also help students to learn more about serving the community and to clearly understand the recent political topics related to the issue.

Students can drop off new items like deodorant, toothpaste, razors, Band-Aids and lots more in large bins located in the high school and Judd lobbies through Dec. 16.

Chicago has served as a sanctuary city to welcome the migrants and is expecting more over the next two months, as a result of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott moving the immigrants from Texas to Chicago.

Rathin Shah, president of the Political Discourse Club, said running this drive is about serving the community.

“You’re doing these small things that will help people infinitely in the future. It’s really important to do things in your community,” Rathin said.

Yolotzin Martinez, a member of Junior State of America, emphasized the migrants’ need for help.

Yolotzin said, “All help is needed and welcome with this drive, and many people are in need of all of the supplies that would be donated.”
