To support migrants who have recently arrived in Chicago, Latinos Unidos is hosting a clothing drive through Oct. 23. The drive accepts hats, gloves, new or gently used coats, socks, blankets and new undergarments for all ages and genders. Collection boxes are located at each entrance to the school.
Diana Chavez and Yolo Martinez, Latinos Unidos co-presidents, both expressed they wanted to help out in any way possible.
“Latinos Unidos has always strived to advocate for migrants,” Diana said, “so when doing this drive, we were thinking of the recent migrant crisis.”
Yolo said that the whole club wanted to host the drive to help out migrants who may be unprepared for the winter months.
“The whole club felt that it would be a good idea because we love to help out in our communities,” Yolo said.
Diana explained winter gear is specifically needed to help people without heating when winter comes.
“Chicago winters are really rough, and right now migrants’ living conditions aren’t what they are supposed to be,” Diana said. “They’re living in tents outside police stations, and any little change we can make is enough to help even the smallest amount of people.”
