To bring U-High students together and help expose them to foods from other cultures, the new Global Foods Club will meet every Thursday at lunch in Room C-123 to educate students about different cultures by having certain members choose a food each week and bring it into the club.
Senior Maurice Newman, founder of the club, hopes people are interested in and willing to try different foods. He thinks of this club as a good way to learn about diverse kinds of foods and to become comfortable with other cultures.
“A lot of the polarization that we have in today’s society comes from people being afraid of the other, in general, not just political polarization,” Maurice said. “People are often afraid and unfamiliar with other cultures, and I think that food is a good way to begin that introduction to a different culture because food is something that ties everyone together.”
From his grandmother making food for special occasions to his mother’s home-cooked dinners every night, Maurice said, food has always brought people together in his family.
“People are always drawn to food and when people can connect over something every person needs it’s nice,” he said.
Some of the club’s goals are to plan food drives as well as a schoolwide event where people can come to eat and learn about a different culture.
