The Model United Nations team competed at two events in February, including a tournament at Francis W. Parker School on Feb. 10 and a Feb. 16 weekend conference at Georgetown University.
Several U-High students took home awards from the Georgetown competition, the largest and most prestigious MUN conference. Sophomore Julian Rossi received best delegate, and six other students received honorable and outstanding mentions.
Additionally, the team received the Best Small Delegation award at Parker.
Senior Sohail Sajdeh, one of the team’s secretaries-general, explained that the tournaments start with an opening ceremony, and then the team members split into separate subcommittees.
“Some people were working on topics that involve refugees or water scarcity — all sorts of issues that are going on in the world,” Sohail said. “We debate the topics, and then we work together to write a paper addressing these issues.”
Gabi Novak, a ninth grader on the team, said that although the research and preparation for the competitions is intense, she appreciates the team dynamic.
“You gain a real sense of camaraderie on the team,” Gabi said. “You really want people to do well.”
