A Laboratory Schools security staff member has received an award from the University of Chicago.
Dan Green was awarded the Department of Safety and Security’s Community Service Officer of the Year Award in a ceremony at the Quadrangle Club on March 7.
Mr. Green credits receiving the award because he stepped into the role of Lab’s director of safety and security after Brian Canavan left in September.
“In what was read, they praised me for stepping into the director’s role, they praised me for handling the job professionally and they praised me for basically being a dedicated employee,” Mr Green said.
Mr. Green has worked at the university for 35 years and at Lab for the past 25 years, so the award was also for dedicated years of service within the community.
“I was honored, I was really truly honored to win the award,” he said.
The person who nominated Mr. Green for the award — who chose to remain anonymous — had to write a explanation as to why they believed he would be a good recipient.
“It is quite the recognition to be employee of the year,” Mr. Green said. “Some of the awards were for police officers who had accomplished things in the field and saved lives, but to be the overall employee of the year was phenomenal.”
Mr. Green was chosen out of police officers, community service officers and outside security all within the university’s department of safety and security.
“It was all just very heartwarming,” he said.
