As budget cuts influence more and more of U-High sports, students and teachers are creating new athletic clubs to play their favorite sports.
Former varsity sports sailing and squash have become competitive clubs, while two new athletic clubs, Flip Fanatics and Boys Volleyball Club, have been established.
Flip Fanatics is a tumbling club created by junior Cecilia Siegel and sophomore Savannah Woodson as a space for students to improve and develop their tumbling and dance techniques. Nichole Magliocco is their adviser, and the club meets Mondays in the mat room in Sunny Gymnasium.
Savannah said the average club meeting is fun.
“I have a speaker, so I blast music and it’s a very fun, lively environment,” Savannah said.
Club leaders hope to bring a coach in from Savannah’s cheer team to teach some of the members tumbling skills and plan to use some of their funds to take a Saturday trip to an open gym.
Boys Volleyball was created by senior Courtney McDonald and junior Luka Venga-Spofford.
There is no school-sponsored boys volleyball team at U-High, so this club provides the competitive sport for those who are interested, according to the clubs spreadsheet.
Club leaders wrote, “We hope that by the end of each spring season, you come out more knowledgeable, and inclined to learn more about the game.”
The club leaders added that they hope to host team scrimmages, fundraise for charity and even host games against other schools.
