A community service officer walks out of the U-High lobby, performing their daily surveillance round. Just outside the doors, they observe a giddy first grade class playing tag on the playground, sweaty sixth graders walking back from their P.E. classes and the hungry high schoolers leaving for Medici during a free period. All is well. However, if something was awry, they would provide help immediately.
To reinforce safety at Lab, the security team has decided to increase the number of surveillance rounds made by community service officers around campus this year. In addition to observing the building entrances, all CSOs will now also walk around sectioned areas inside and outside the historic campus, checking the gates and emergency exits, and monitoring for safety concerns.
Michael McGehee, director of safety and security, hopes this change will also increase students’ confidence in their safety.
“Students should hopefully see the CSOs more around Lab and feel more comfortable and be more familiar with the faces of CSOs,” Mr. McGehee said. “It’s like any other Lab staff member walking the halls. It should just be another familiar face on our campus.”
