Select members from the Model United Nations team won the best small delegation in a conference at Brown University from Nov. 8-10, and less-experienced delegates won the best medium delegation award in a conference at St. Ignatius College Prep on Nov. 2. Multiple individual awards were received at both conferences.
At the Brown conference, seven students received a best delegate award, and four students received the outstanding delegate award.
Sophomore Arjun Sawhney won the outstanding delegate award at Brown.
“I think everyone on the team worked really hard for this conference, and it showed,” Arjun said. “We came home with the best small delegation, so at a college conference that’s really all that matters.”
At the Saint Ignatius College Prep conference, seven students won the best delegate awards, and seven students won the outstanding delegate award. There was one honorable mention.
Ninth grader Sofia Caldentey won the best delegate award at Saint Ignatius.
“I was nervous because it was my first conference, and competing was kind of difficult at first,” Sofia said, “but then once you got the hang of it, it was a lot of fun. A lot of the freshmen were definitely nervous because this was our first conference.”
In preparation for future conferences, Arjun said the team hopes to improve their prep and how they interact with other delegates.
“Our upcoming conferences are going to be more difficult than the one we just had, so to reflect that we are going to start prepping a bit earlier,” Arjun said. “Overall, at this conference, we did very well given all the conditions. Every single person on the team did very well.”
