Eight U-High photojournalists have received 13 awards in a national competition, the most by far that has been received in this contest.
A total of 6,200 entries from 120 schools were submitted to the Association of Texas Photography Instructors Fall Contest.
Simon Vaang, a sophomore who started Beginning Photojournalism this year, received four awards. He had prior experience taking photos.
He said, “I took them before school and didn’t even think about entering any contests.”
Even though Simon didn’t expect the photos to win, he still recognized their worth.
“I was hoping I would get a bit of recognition because I thought the pictures looked solid,” he said.
Photojournalism teacher Jayna Rumble said she was proud of so many of her students entering the contest.
She said, “I think it’s great when students put their work out there.”
