Seniors Krish Khanna and Juliana Walker have been selected to be a part of the IHSA Academic All-State Team. Krish was selected to the first team and plays tennis and golf. Juliana was named an honorable mention and plays volleyball and basketball.
All 800 IHSA schools can nominate one male student and one female student that possess a minimum 3.5 grade point average and have participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored sports.
Krish became the third student-athlete in Laboratory Schools history to be named a member of the first team. Chase Chavin was chosen in 1997 and Harrison Shapiro in 2018, according to information from the athletics department.
“I’m proud to be able to bring back this honor for Lab and for my coaches,” Krish said. “I also know some of the other IHSA student athletes who have been selected for this award. It’s fantastic to belong to such a distinguished group of athletes from around the state.”
The team consists of 26 members who are chosen by a committee of IHSA principals, athletic directors and activities directors, according to the IHSA website. Honorees will be recognized at a banquet in Bloomington on April 13.
The application process required students to submit information about the sports they play, test scores, GPA, awards, two letters of recommendation and a short essay.
Juliana was initially surprised at the nomination and honorable mention because she has only been playing basketball for two years, but she was still very grateful for the recognition.
“I was very honored in general. It means a lot to me to know my contribution to the Maroons’ sports has actually been there and helpful,” Juliana said. “It’s nice to know that I can represent our school in that way.”
