Just after 3:30 p.m. on May 31, the last Friday of the school year, U-High students gathered on Scammon Garden to enjoy Labstock, a Student Council-organized cookout, games and final community gathering before the summer. The north to south end of the garden was filled with bubble soccer, burgers and hot dogs, and even a dunk tank.

Labstock is organized by the Student Council’s executive board. Cultural Union president Ben O’Donnell has been helping to prepare for the event since his election in April.

“We just wanted to have a good group come and stay throughout the entire event,” Ben said. “We want the environment to be filled with activities.”

In addition to food and activities, this year’s Labstock featured performances from faculty and students. Ninth graders Isaac Sutherland and Priya Yamada performed a rendition of “Here Comes the Sun.” Isaac, who learned to play the Beatles song on the guitar, asked Priya to sing with him.

“Performing with Isaac was a full-circle moment. Him and I are both performers. We love an audience, telling stories and being proud of what we can create for others,” Priya said. “At Labstock, we weren’t really performing for anyone else other than each other. Performing ‘Here Comes the Sun’ was our way of saying we made it.”

Ninth grader Ledya Wreden was surprised by the turnout at Labstock. She enjoyed playing basketball and the Toxic Meltdown inflatable game.

Leyda said, “I think Labstock is a good way to hang out with friends after school right before the end of the year.”
