The U-High Midway newspaper and website and the U-Highlights yearbook have been announced as winners of the Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The Crown Award is one of the most prestigious honors given to student publications for the previous school year. The publications will be awarded either a gold or silver Crown at the CSPA convention in New York in March.
The Midway was among 66 high school publications recognized in the hybrid news category, including both digital and print news formats. This year’s Crown Award marks the Midway’s eighth consecutive Crown and 28th overall.
Midway editor-in-chief Jaya Alenghat said that the award represents the result of countless hours of teamwork and collaboration.
“I think that it reflects a lot of the hard work and dedication that so many staff members and just people on the Midway team in general have put into creating such a meaningful paper and website,” Jaya said.
The 2024 U-Highlights was one of 39 yearbooks recognized this year. This is the U-High yearbook’s second Crown Award since its first recognition in 2023.
U-Highlights editor-in-chief Daniel Chang said the award reflects the team’s perseverance and determination, despite limited staff and split class periods last year.
“I think this reward really demonstrates how much hard work went into not only just making the book,” Daniel said, “but then trying to figure out the dynamic that we were trying to work with last year.”
