The indoor track and field team ended its season March 29 at the Illinois Top Times competition and the Illinois Indoor Championships, which happened on the same day. During the season, senior George Ofori-Mante broke the 60-meter school record. Additionally, senior team captain Simon Lane broke the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter school records. The boys 4×800-meter relay team of Simon Lane, Connor Lane, Sean Niro and Marko Nagel also broke the indoor school record for that event.
“It felt like a culmination of my hard work in high school,” Simon said about his two broken records. “I trained hard over the winter. I ran like seven miles a week. I wanted to make a big jump, and I did.”
At Illinois Top Times, Simon placed first in the 3,200-meter and 12th in the 1,600-meter, and sophomore Taara Sajdeh placed 7th in the 3,200-meter and 15th in the 1,600-meter. Sophomore Celia Lukas placed 14th in the 3,200-meter at the Illinois Indoor Championships.
Taara feels the season went very well for the entire team and herself. During this season, she was recovering from an injury.
“I was coming off a really, really big injury this cross country season, which had left me on crutches, and so going into the season, I wasn’t expecting much,” Taara said, “but when I opened up the season with a time very close to my PR, I knew great things were in store.”
