The Math Team placed third in the 3AA division of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state finals at Illinois State University on April 6, where 27 U-High students participated in both individual and team contests. Both the Fresh-Soph two-person team and the Algebra 2 team won first place in their categories.
Junior captain Sonakshi Mutreja attributed the team’s success to strong partnership and teamwork skills.
“Obviously it was fun to compete at Illinois State University, but the team collaboration overall is really great,” Sonakshi said.
Senior captain Adam Tang, who has been on the math team for four years, echoed this sentiment.
“At the Illinois State tournament it was really nice to work together — it’s a tightly knit community,” he said.
Sonakshi mentioned that on the bus ride back, students had a fun time socializing with each other and celebrating the team success.
“Being able to do math in such a collaborative environment is really fun,” she said. “I’m really proud of what the team has been able to accomplish.”
