Sophomore Ishie Holz speaks with junior Helen Kraemer during the first training conference of the year at Carl Sandburg High School on Oct. 14.

In the first training conference of the year, the Model United Nations team sent sophomores and juniors to Carl Sandburg High School on Oct. 14, where the team won Best Medium Delegation and showed an exceptional start to the competition season.

Daniel Chang, Ishie Holz, Kate Ryan and Raza Zaidi won best delegate, and several other students received individual awards.

This year, the U-High’s secretaries general decided not to send ninth graders to the competition to grant them more time to prepare for upcoming, more significant conferences, while experienced competitors could use the opportunity to build their skills.

Secretary General Areen Khan said she is proud of the team’s performance, and looks forward to the rest of this year.

“We love starting off with a win. We hope that we can continue this streak of going in and winning best delegation,” Areen said. “Now we’re gonna have a lot more rookie events coming up, so that’s going to be our focus before we get into our more competitive competitions later on this year.”
