To recognize the contribution of adults in the Lab community, the Unsung Heroes brunch held on April 11 in Ida Noyes Hall honored 13 faculty and staff members.

Each sophomore advisory nominated one Unsung Hero, or an adult who does anything from saying hi in the hallway to helping students with their classes. Two representatives from each advisory gave a short speech for their honoree.

This year’s honorees are:

Isaac Berrueta, history teacher

Cynthia Boykin, community service officer

William Hohnke, choral teacher

Farukh Khan, math teacher

Hannah McCarrell, personal trainer

Sandra Palmer, locker room attendant

Emese el Bissante Pasztor, high school office project assistant

Robyn Roland, attendance project assistant

Jayna Rumble, journalism teacher

Francisco Saez, physics teacher

Terry Shanks, locker room attendant

Xavier Smith, Information Systems support desk technician and basketball coach

Patricia Zavala, Spanish teacher

While eating the provided pastries, sophomores watched their peers give speeches about the Lab adults, as students were able to show appreciation for these adults in a formal way.

Devyn Moubayed, who honored Ms. McCarrell, said she enjoyed the gathering, especially being able to honor someone who has been so kind to her.

“It was a really nice gathering of the community to honor some really special people that Lab has,” Devyn said. “It was just really fun, and the fact that I got to speak about one of my favorite people, Hannah, the athletic trainer, was really special to me.”

Devyn said Ms. McCarrell received the award positively.

“I actually liked speaking and being able to give Hannah my gift because I could tell she was really moved and super super happy to receive that award,” Devyn said.
