Kathleen Iatarola, a second grade assistant teacher, will retire after teaching at Lab for the last 23 years, though she plans to return as a substitute teacher. In the immediate future, Ms. Iatorola plans to visit her adult children and travel.
Reflecting on her time at Lab and as a teacher, Ms. Iatorola said she was drawn to teaching because she wanted to make a difference in children’s lives.
“I wanted to help children see the world as a much bigger place and know that they are potential change-makers,” Ms. Iatorola said. “I’ve always felt that looking out for, guiding that younger generation is important.”
According to her, teaching is like a symbiotic relationship, and she enjoys having been able to spend time with 7- and 8-year-olds.
“As I teach I’m also learning every day, and I love it,” she said. “I learn from them and they learn from me.”
