By May 2027, it is expected that all Advanced Placement exams will be administered digitally or in a hybrid format. AP exams have been increasingly transferred to the online platform Bluebook due to security concerns with paper exams.
For the round of exams happening in May 2026, the deadline for registration is Nov. 7, and each test costs $100. There is a $40 late registration or absence fee.
“I do notice that a lot of students do like that they have the option, now, to do a digital or a hybrid digital exam,” Brittney Barrow, Lab’s assessment coordinator, said.
Beyond security and student feedback, the digital exams consolidate student information into one place, making it easier for the College Board to keep up with scores, according to Ms. Barrow.
While AP exam format this year is not expected to change, Ms. Barrow wants to minimize the rooms used for the exams. This is to focus on student needs by not stretching staff thin across numerous rooms.
