In response to record-breaking numbers of new coronavirus cases across the city, Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a stay-at-home advisory for 30 days beginning 6 a.m on Nov. 16.

Residents should stay at home except to attend work or school or for essential needs such as grocery shopping and medical care. Those who leave their homes are expected to wear a face mask and comply with social distancing guidelines.

Residents should also avoid nonessential travel. If an individual travels out of state, they must take a coronavirus test and quarantine for 14 days.

Ms. Lightfoot advised residents not to have any guests at their homes, even for Thanksgiving, where she encouraged remote forms of communication.

Additionally, a 10-person limit was put in place for events that include weddings, funerals and birthday parties.

“If we continue on the path we’re on, and you and me and others don’t step up and do more, our estimates are that we could see 1,000 more Chicagoans die from this virus by the end of the year,” Ms. Lightfoot said during a news conference.
