A Lab sixth grader is a finalist in the 13th annual Doodle for Google competition, representing the sixth to seventh grade age range for Illinois. If the drawing created by Eva Neves receives the most votes, it will be featured as the main Google graphic — the “doodle” — for a day.

The prompt for the Doodle for Google competition was “I am strong because…”  For her design, Eva used markers and pens to draw a character holding up a dark cloud with friends coming to help lift it.

Her response to the prompt was “I am strong because I have friends that can help me.”

The state winners were decided by Google’s guest judges and selected from the United States’ 54 states and territories. All of the state winners have been archived in an online gallery.

The public can vote for Eva’s design on the Doodle for Google website. Voting ends May 14 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

Eva first heard about the competition from a friend. She said she was surprised when she heard she had won for Illinois.

Eva said, “I think I’ve gotten a lot better since I did the Doodle for Google and I think I’ll keep drawing in general.”
