The varsity sailing team ended its spring season by sailing in two national competitions.

The U-High team ranked 14th place out of 17 competitors at the Phebe King Memorial Trophy Regatta, a fleet race which took place in Hampton, Virginia, June 4-5. Sailing on the east coast, they had to use boats they were less familiar with.

“We were sailing boats we never sailed before called ‘FJs’, which are quite similar to ‘420s’ which is what we do sail,” varsity crew member Bryan Pan said. “But there are a few key differences, and it makes life a lot harder, especially in the crew.”

At the National Invitational Team Racing Tournament May 21-22 on Lake Massapoag, Massachusetts, U-High ranked 8th place out of 10 competitors.

“Our scores were not very good, but we improved a lot and we learned a lot,” Bryan said. “We also almost beat the undefeated team. Each race came down to the very end.”
