The Latinos Unidos club is preparing for Día de los Muertos by gathering materials for an ofrenda (altar) display and hosting an after-school celebration Nov. 1.

The club is welcoming students at Lab to participate by bringing flowers, photos and mementos of loved ones to display in the ofrenda, which will be outside the learning and counseling office during the week of Oct. 31.

The celebration of the holiday will take place after school Nov. 1 in Judd C-116 and will include food, decorations and dancing. There will be calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls) to decorate at the celebration.

Additionally there will be other activities available such as decorating papel picado (colorful paper garlands).

Día de los Muertos translates to “Day of the Dead” in English and lasts two days.

“It’s a Mexican holiday where people come together to celebrate the lives of those who have passed on,” club president Juan Chaides, a senior, said.
