St. Patrick’s Day, the famous annual holiday on March 17, attracted enormous crowds, creating the lively and bustling streets of Chicago during the last weekend of spring break. From watching the Chicago Plumbers Union dye the Chicago river emerald green to attending the multiple parades around the city, there were plenty of ways for students to celebrate the holiday.

TRADITIONAL TEMPO. Taíno instruments from the National Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Culture’s Taíno Vive exhibit rest on a display table at the front of the exhibit on the second floor. The instruments present at the museum included maracas and guïro as well as replicas of the traditional boats and bowls of the Taíno people.
Mounting a resistance
Sowing Seeds. Kathleen Valdez, the product manager at Plant Chicago, plants seeds to be harvested in the Indoor Victory Garden. Despite it not being in her job description, Ms. Valdez enjoys working beyond her parameters to help the community. “Im proud to work at a sustainably focused, unique organization that gives us the flexibility to find our interests and implement them in our day to day,” Ms. Valdez said.
Plant Chicago focuses on fostering community
Customers stroll through the crowded aisles of bikes at the non-profit store Working Bikes. Established in Chicago 25 years ago, their mission is to send bikes around the world in the hopes of making eco-friendly transportation available for communities , like in Africa and Latin America, that depend on it. Having volunteered there when she was in high school, Katie Clendenning, the service and learning coordinator, said “Working Bikes is a really interesting organization because I think they do a really good job of both thinking and working locally, and also thinking and working globally.”
