Chloe; One of the best things about clubs is being able to work with people across grades. However, as the school years close, Seniors leave and pass down leadership and freshmen join with new ideas. Despite this constant change in leadership, clubs continue to grow and evolve.
Chloe: Senior Ainsley Williams, who has been one of the co-presidents for Junior State of America, says that over the past year, the new younger members have brought in a new perspective during conversations.
Ainsley: “The younger members bring a different perspective, like we’re all at different levels…”
Chloe: However, her and her co-president are still trying to improve their club by getting more out into the community.
“…And I think we’re also working on getting out into the larger Lab community, like we did an assembly in the beginning of the year, we did….”
Chloe: Like most clubs, they are also trying to get more younger freshmen to join as it makes conversations more nuanced as well as provide future candidates for presidents, keeping the club running.
Ainsley: “I guess we’re trying to recruit more younger members like underclassmen, freshmen, sophomores and I think that’s gone- thats like been pretty successful, we have a lot more younger members this year and that’s helpful because now we have more leadership candidates for the future and just people that well help recruit other younger grades, future younger grades so yeah.”
Chloe: Shirley Volk, librarian and sponsor of HLAB, says that one thing that’s kept the club the same is new members filling in the same roles of the club.
Ms. Volk: “Every club, just like every classroom, is going to have a dynamic based on the personalities of the members, so I think naturally you’re going to have kids that want to take on more of a leadership role, kind of step up.”
Chloe: Reflecting on her graduation being months away, Ainsley looks forward to sophomores and juniors filling in her role.
Ainsley: “It’s definitely bittersweet, but also we have a lot of great juniors and sophomores who I think are gonna be great leaders.”
