The senior art show, which allows seniors to display art they had created in art classes throughout the year, is now available to view in Gordon Parks Arts Hall until May 20.
Gina Alicea, a fine arts teacher and the curator of this collection, has worked to organize the 36 submitted pieces into a unified exhibit. In preparation for this exhibit, she made sure every displayed piece could be properly hung up or set on a pedestal. Despite the hard work, Ms. Alicea is happy to go through the effort.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to have a professional exhibition of the seniors to honor them,” Ms. Alicea said.
Ms. Alicea says that she is additionally excited for both younger students and teachers of seniors whose work is displayed in the collection to see the art on show.
“If you’re at Lab School for your whole career, it’s really exciting for the younger ones to see what the older ones are making,” Ms. Alicea said. “I also want the teachers that have taught those students to see that work and say to their seniors, ‘Hey, I saw your work, it looks great.’”
Sofia Picciola, whose work is featured in the senior art show, sees the opportunity as nostalgic and a way to see how she’s grown throughout her time taking the Mixed Media art course.
“It’s kind of like a moment to look back and reflect on everything,” Sofia said. “You know, you spend a lot of time in the art class working on the art, and we took a field trip to see other artists, so it’s kind of a time for the seniors to be that artist.”
