To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Gordon Parks Arts Hall, photographer Devin Allen will come to Lab and present his photography in the Corvus Gallery, honoring Mr. Parks’ legacy.
Mr. Allen will serve as a visiting artist at U-High from Feb. 17-20. He will present to U-High photography classes — Photography, AP Photography and all photojournalism levels — showing them his art and helping them learn to cultivate change through photography. A reception, open to all students who want to hear from Mr. Allen, will be held in the Corvus Gallery Feb. 19 from 4-6 p.m.
Gallery curator Gina Alicea, a middle school fine arts teacher, hopes Mr. Allen will encourage students to pursue art.
“I hope the students get inspired,” Ms. Alicea said. “You know, Gordon Parks and Devin Allen do not come from an art background. You don’t need training to be able to get your voice heard in the world. You just need inspiration and to follow the inspiration.”
Like Mr. Parks, Mr. Allen is a self-taught photographer who focuses on capturing moments of injustice in America. Mr. Allen’s work has twice been featured on the cover of Time magazine — once when he was only 26 and still an amateur photographer. As a Gordon Parks Foundation Fellow, Mr. Allen works to carry on Mr. Parks’ legacy by photographing what is happening in America, which is why he was selected to be the resident artist.
Student photography will also be featured in the Corvus Gallery exhibit along with Mr. Allen’s work, representing the next generation of photographers.
