Dozens of students will need to find a new go-to place for lunch — and they’re shocked and disappointed.
On Feb. 12, Dean of Students Ana Campos posted on Schoology that while U-High students could still buy food at Everett Kovler Cafe at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, they are no longer permitted to eat there.
Ms. Campos said she received complaints in the fall from Booth staff and alerted U-High students in a Schoology post that, to keep the privilege of studying and eating at Booth, they could not dwell in spaces outside the cafe, such as the Winter Garden, and were expected to be respectful.
After U-High students violated the policy, Booth administrators decided to stop allowing students to study or eat in the cafe. Ms. Campos said in an interview with the Midway that the Booth School’s dean of students had received complaints from Booth students concerning the presence of U-High students.
Ms. Campos said that if U-High students had respected the rules to stay in the cafe, the change would not have happened.
“You are a guest in other people’s spaces, and when you don’t follow their rules, then they have a right to make new rules,” Ms. Campos said.
Senior Anaya Douglas said she was surprised by the change, as she frequently visited Booth to eat lunch and study.
“I’m a senior, so I’ve kind of grown up with Booth throughout my high school career. It’s always been one of the features of going to Lab and being connected to a university that I have always really enjoyed,” Anaya said. “I am a little bit sad that our community got that privilege taken away, but I’m at least grateful that we can still buy food there.”
Ninth-grader Hazel Hotz was similarly disappointed.
“I just think that it’s a little interesting that because of some people’s actions, everyone as a whole can’t even study there,” Hazel said. “I think that’s not fair.”
