The boys swimming and diving team’s season ended Feb. 21, finishing in fourth at the IHSA sectionals. Although the team fell short of qualifying for state, the team had a strong showing, including winning the Independent School League championship.
Sam Oyler, a senior and captain, was happy with the season overall but was a little bit frustrated with his sectional result, reflecting on how close margins in swimming often end up deciding races.
“I think especially swimming is so close, so a few milliseconds can decide a lot,” Sam said. “For my best event, the one that I was trying to go to state for, I missed the interval by something like 0.4 of a second, so that was a bit of a bummer.”
Even with the season coming to an end without any swimmers qualifying for state, Sam was really happy with how the season went, appreciating how many new members the swimming team had this year.
“It was quite cool just being a senior and a captain on the team and getting to connect with all the different freshmen who swam varsity and junior varsity,” Sam said. “It was really cool to connect with all these kids and see them in the hallway every day, and it really makes swimming, which is an individual sport, more of a community.”
