Correction, April 14: This story has been updated to clarify that the delayed start time was due solely to an ID scanning issue, not to a coat-check malfunction as previously stated.
A special surprise pink Porsche was displayed at the patio entrance to Gordon Parks Arts Hall as students arrived for the “Tokyo Drift”-themed Spring Fling dance held in Sherry Lansing Theater March 28 from 7:30-10 p.m.
The start of the dance was delayed about 20 minutes due to technical difficulties with ID scanning. The issue required Dean of Students Ana Campos to collect IDs manually before allowing students in.
The dance featured fake pink cherry blossom flowers, glowing table lights and cardboard car cutouts, transforming the space into a street-racing inspired scene. Snacks included pizza and chocolate-covered Pocky, plus toy cars and sunglasses as party favors.
Tickets were $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
During the week leading up to the dance, Student Council hosted a Spirit Week and a pep rally to build excitement and promote ticket sales. Themes included “Anything but a backpack day” and Maroon Day.
Cultural Union President Daniel Wu said planning this year’s dance came with added challenges.
“I would say having to plan both the pep rally and the dance was definitely a lot on our plate,” Daniel said. “There were definitely a bunch of setbacks, but overall, I think we executed it pretty well.”
Daniel added that while attendance did not meet expectations, the turnout was still solid.
“We’re glad that 386 people came and had fun, but it wasn’t as much as we were expecting,” he said.
Freshman Sofia Concepcion Salvo said she enjoyed this year’s homecoming dance better since it was better presented and promoted than the Spring Fling.
“I really like the hoco theme better,” Sofia said. “Just because I feel like the theme was more expressed at the dance.”
