Japanese Garden in Jackson Park, just outside the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, is a serene area to visit for a break in life.

Sometimes all you need is a place to rest your mind and body. Along with many high-energy fitness opportunities, Chicago is home to many gardens and outdoor spaces that provide an oasis from the fast-moving intensity of daily life. Take a seat in one of these scenic spots for a moment of serenity.

Japanese garden: Just outside the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, hidden within the scenic and historic Jackson Park, is a beautiful relaxation destination: the Japanese Garden, or Garden of the Phoenix. Representing the relationship between the United States and Japan, this garden’s plantings and pond are beautifully maintained. The park’s tranquil sounds can help you calmly start off the day, cool down or relax at any time.

Urban greenspace: Steps from the buzz of South Michigan Avenue is the Art Institute of Chicago’s gorgeous South Garden. Its convenient placement downtown allows for a quick stop in this lush garden, surrounded by historic architecture, a fountain and blossoming greenery.

Natural hideaway: The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, located on the north edge of the Lincoln Park Zoo is another Chicago relaxation destination. After a day of workouts or if you just need a moment to yourself, take a seat beside the pool covered with lily pads or walk around the boardwalk. Be sure to stop and listen for the native dragonfly, bird, butterfly and frog species.
