The Math Team has come home with another victory, winning the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contest in the 3AA division April 26 at Illinois State University. A mix-up in scoring led the team to be announced as third at the competition, but a notification later confirmed U-High as the winner.
The mix-up happened due to a scoring mistake with U-High’s score for one of the events being switched with another team’s score. Jovin Alenghat, who won first in the freshman/sophomore eight-person event as well as the algebra team event, said he wasn’t expecting the change at all.
“Just randomly this past Wednesday, they were like, ‘So actually they missed a ton of the points and we got first,’” Jovin said.
Aside from that, the team worked very hard as they had been preparing for the event since the start of the second semester.
The freshman/sophmore eight-person event took a lot of practice, Jovin said. Every Wednesday, the eight students would gather and take a practice test. At the end, they were also given an individual test to take home.
Victor Chen, math team captain, said he was nervous going into the competition but was glad all of their hard work paid off.
“I think going in, we felt pretty prepared,” Victor said. “We were working really hard.”
