High school students are allowed to leave campus during lunch if they wish. While many students choose to eat in Café Lab, club meetings or even hallways, more seem to be crossing Kimbark Avenue to eat at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Here are the opinions of students regarding where they eat and why.
“I like eating in GPAH because I like the natural light. I think it helps me focus on my homework, and I like that it’s a bit quieter than it would be in other places.”
— Gabriella Novak, junior
“I like eating in the halls because it’s a lot quieter and it’s easier to talk with my friends.”
— Khelan Rai-Merchant, ninth grader
“I don’t really like the cafeteria because it’s really loud and dirty, and there’s a lot of people there, and the bridge outside GPAH is nice, especially when it’s nice outside, and you can sit with a selective group of people.”
— Macabee Callard, senior
“If I wasn’t at a club, I’d eat at the second-floor lounge as I often find some of my friends there.”
— Shivan Sachdev, sophomore
“I like that Booth is more open, and the food is a lot better here, and the food in the cafeteria is good, but there are a lot more options here.”
— Laurel Farmer, junior
“I eat on the third floor of Judd because that’s primarily where the seniors have lockers, and I don’t really know any underclassmen, so I can really be confined to my grade.”
— Carolyn Payne, senior
“I eat in the hallway with my friends because it’s much less crowded than many other spots, like the cafeteria, and because it’s right by our lockers, so we can quickly get our things and go to our classes after lunch.”
— Mya Yao-Cowden, sophomore
“I like being in the library because there’s too many people in the cafeteria and I like to be alone.”
— Felix Esterhazy, sophomore
“I like to go to Booth because it’s a change of scenery, and it’s a place my friends and I can all meet, because it’s consistent and we can get food there.”
— Claire Zeigler, sophomore
“I eat in GPAH because it’s really open, and during my first few weeks of high school, that’s where my friends were eating, so I went with them.”
— Issa Burns, ninth grader
