The debate team has had three tournaments this season but has failed to qualify for elimination rounds or receive awards for speakers, facing the challenge of adjusting to a new coaching staff.
The team appeared in the Niles Township Invitational on Sept. 13 in Skokie, the Trevian Invitational on Oct. 11 in Winnetka and the Iowa Caucus Debates on Oct. 24 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Senior Devdan Jeffrey thought that some of the difficulties arose due to the coaching changes.
“Especially with new coaches this year, we didn’t have a lot of time to practice over the summer,” he said.
Devdan hopes that these tournaments will serve as a foundation for some changes in the Debate team’s practices.
“The first couple tournaments for us were definitely learning experiences,” he said. “We are stepping up the commitment going forward in the future.”
