After three competitions so far in the season, the Math Team currently stands at fourth place in the state for the Illinois Math League and fifth in the state for the North Suburban Math League. The Oct. 14 results weren’t available until the week of Nov. 3 due to a results delay.
Oct. 29 competition
At the most recent competition, the NSML at Hersey High School, the team placed ninth in the competition, causing a fall from second to fifth in the state.
Oct. 14 competition
At the second competition of the season, the team tied for fourth place, with junior Erik Mykland receiving a perfect score.
Sophomore Ken Wang was running late for the competition, but he was still able to perform well and mainly show up for his team.
“It was a roller coaster, you see, I was really worried because I was like, oh no, there’s a math team competition. I need to be there for my team. But then, after seeing the problems, I was relieved, and after the competition I felt really good,” he said.
Sept. 25 competition
The first competition of the season was for the NSML hosted at Naperville North High School, where U-High placed second.
Senior Victor Chen, captain of the U-High Math Team, said he was happy with the results and the overall team performance.
“We went to Naperville North on Thursday afternoon. We did pretty well, I’m pretty proud of our team. We got second place there and we also tied for first in the candy round competition.”
The senior team tied for first with Evanston, and seven U-High students earned perfect scores: ninth graders Bella Li and Jinglian Wu; sophomores Alex Zhang, Jack Li, and Ken Wang; and juniors David Li and Tinson Xu. There were no perfect senior scores from the competition.
U-High math teacher David Hartigan, co-head coach, explained the competition format.
“In that first competition, you are competing against those that finished similarly to you the previous year,” Mr. Hartigan said. “We finished seventh last year, which means that we competed against the 6th through 10th-place teams. Finishing second was a very good outcome for us and also very consistent with what we did last year.”
